Summer Enrichment: Sojourn to the Past through the Eyes of a Civil Rights Icon- Description
- This class offers an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a meaningful dialogue with a member of the Little Rock Nine! Collaborate with like-minded people who share your passion for civil rights and increase your awareness of global citizenship and learn strategies for implementing lessons from the civil rights era in your daily life.
For students considering taking AP US History, this class will help them with the AP exam. There is no homework associated with the class.
Jeff Steinberg is an American History teacher and non-profit director. He founded "Sojourn to the Past" and has worked with thousands of high school students and civil rights heroes alike. He specializes in "living history" and facilitates experiential learning in order to bring history to life and give meaning to the present. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including an award from Dr. King's family last year, called "A Salute to Greatness," the Jefferson Award for educators, and the Hidden Heroes Award from the Andrew Goodman Foundation. Sojourn to the Past has been featured in the USA Today, SF Chronicle, The San Jose Mercury and many other publications around the country and has been featured on television shows, such as CNN.
Minnijean Brown Trickey is a member of The Little Rock Nine, one of the first nine African American students to desegregate schools in the United States in 1957. She has received numerous awards throughout the country and has been honored at the White House with the Congressional Gold Medal, and is a featured Civil Rights speaker requested at numerous conferences around the world.
NOTE: Minnijean Brown Trickey will be our special guest throughout the week, alongside Jeff Steinberg. This class has no lunch period.
