Summer Enrichment: Advanced Economics and Stock Market Investing

Description
This five-day course will build on and apply the skills in the introductory course, culminating with students constructing a highly integrated sector based stock portfolio. The objective of the industry expertise is to allow student to "dig deep" and learn more about the specifics a market sector. The student teams will design and construct, a market diversified stock portfolio to present to potential investors. In a workshop of 35 students, there will be five teams of seven students. Each team will have a "specialist" from each Market Sector(s) who will bring expertise of that sector to the team. The course will use a collaborative approach with students specializing in a Market Sector Research Group and participating on a Portfolio Team Market Sector Research Groups: The Market Sector Research Groups will allow students to become "experts" in a specific sector(s) of the economy. This will require students to research the industry, the companies in the sector, and the market elements that drive the industries. Market Sector Groups will present daily to the all participants, creating a body of information and knowledge for the entire workshop. Market Sectors: Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Energy, Financials, Healthcare, Industrials, Information Technology, Real Estate, Telecommunication Services, and Utilities. Portfolio Team: The objective of the team-based portfolio will be to allow students to collaborate and discuss stock selections and investment strategy while managing a client’s money. Each team will include a member from the Market Sector Group so that each group will have an "expert" from each sector. The team will select at least 40 stocks across ten (10) market sectors, managing a $500,000 portfolio. Students will have instructional time, sector research time, and team portfolio construction time during the workshop in order to fully understand and apply the concepts of the course. The course will culminate with each team making a presentation of their portfolio to "potential investors." The following topics from the Introductory Course will be reviewed: 1. Economics to Understand the Stock Market and its Environment-Circular Flow, Business Cycle, Leading Economic Indicators, Federal Reserve 2. Time Value of Money-Stock Calculations-Present Value-Future Value-Financial Calculators, PE Ratio, Stock Price v. Stock Valuation 3. Portfolio Theory-Risk Analysis–Diversification, Beta 4. Stock Market Basics-What are Stocks, Different Types of Stocks, How Stocks Trade, How to Read a Stock Table/Quote, etc. NOTE: This class has a lunch period. Please bring your own lunch.
