Summer Enrichment: Intro to Economics and Stock Market Investing

A “Hands-On” Workshop of Building and Managing Stock Portfolios

This five-day introductory course will culminate with students building both a team portfolio and an individual portfolio.

The objective of the team-based portfolio is to allow students to collaborate and discuss stock selection and investment strategy while managing a client’s money. The team will select at least 30 stocks across ten (10) market sectors, managing a $250,000 portfolio.

The individual portfolio will allow each student the independence to make individual trades and implement alternative investment strategies on his own. The individual will select at least 15 stocks across at least three (3) market sectors, managing a $100,000 portfolio.

Instruction will consist of parallel tracks:

1. Students will investigate a range of companies using tools they will learn during the course.
2. Students will understand and apply the concepts of economic environment that influence markets and stock performance.

Students will have instructional time, team portfolio and individual portfolio time during the course in order to fully understand and apply the concepts of the course. The objective of the course is to allow students to understand key concepts of the market and stock selection and to "explore" the different stock selections.

Instructional topics will include:

1. Economics to Understand the Stock Market and its Environment-Circular Flow, Business Cycle, Leading Economic Indicators, Federal Reserve
2. Time Value of Money-Stock Calculations-Present Value-Future Value-Financial Calculators, PE ratio, Stock Price v. Stock Valuation
3. Portfolio Theory-Risk Analysis–Diversification, Beta
4. Stock Market Basics-What are Stocks, Different Types of Stocks, How Stocks Trade, How to Read a Stock Table/Quote, etc.

Class includes lunch period; please bring your own lunch.
